MISSED CONNECTIONS

“Missed Connections”, a show about the what ifs of life specifically, the what ifs we ponder on our morning commute.  A “missed connection”is a small post that people put in the back of a newspaper or on craigslist. One day an artist named Sophie Blackall discovered them and was so inspired by the words of these long lost lovers that she started to draw pictures of her version of the stories.  I have been obsessed with these drawings for years and used to make up my own as a kid.  When I was looking for inspiration for my musical, I thought what else is more inspiring to me than my favorite artist and, the city I've lived and loved my whole life, New York.

What is about? Its a cycle of stories told by commuters on the NYC subway. 10 actors play multiple characters. Only two of them have names.  Alex Blackall and Sophie (an ode to the artist I love so dearly).  In a staged version of the show an actor would come onstage to sing and then leave and come back as another character.  Basically a revolving door of stories. We hear about classic missed connections, along with group experiences, like the train getting stuck in the station. We also hear a lot of individual stories that give the audience a peek into the minds of these characters. Missed Connections is about love, community, longing and most importantly, connection.
